What does wellbeing mean at Junior College?

Wellbeing is more than just physical health; it’s about supporting each student’s overall mental and emotional health too. We recognise that every learner is unique, with different needs and strengths. Our comprehensive support covers:

Learning challenges: Helping students overcome dyslexia, dyspraxia, and other learning difficulties through tailored teaching methods.

Inclusive Learning support: Nurturing talents and providing individualised support for learners that are neurodiverse or experience barriers to learning.

Mental and emotional health: Creating a safe space where students can discuss challenges and access professional guidance.

On-site café and refectory: An ideal safe space for socialising and relaxing between classes, as well as a dedicated student centre to help create independence and growth.

Our goal is to empower students to become confident, independent learners, prepared for future success.

What types of support are available?

Starting somewhere new with people you haven’t met before can be overwhelming or some students, which is why we have a Student Progression Mentor at EKC Sheppey Junior College that work with students on their course ensuring they are supported during their studies with the transition. Our services are designed to address a wide range of needs:

  • Focused transition activities: Preparing students for their college journey so that they know what to expect and how it may be different from school or home-schooling.
  • Dedicated Student Progression Mentor: Each student is assigned a mentor who can provide 1:1 wellbeing support and can check in on students as needed.
  • Independence skills development: Teaching life skills for a self-reliant future so that students can become more independent outside of College life.
  • Available inclusion boxes: There are inclusions boxes in all Junior College classrooms that contain items to support learning
  • Health support and advice: Ensuring students’ health needs are met daily, including any administration of medication.
  • Exam adjustments: Exam access arrangements to support students in overcoming barriers to exams and to reflect normal ways of working.
  • Specialist Dyslexic tutor: There is a specially dedicated tutor for students with Dyslexia who can meet with students to develop study strategies and support in exams.

We conduct assessments to tailor support and maintain close contact through regular reviews. During your induction, we’ll introduce you to the facilities and resources available to you. As needs change, so does our support because we know flexibility is key.
