Community Week brings together students and staff from across the College to engage in social action projects which give back to the local community.
This week serves as a valuable opportunity for students to apply the skills they’ve learnt and are continuing to develop, whilst completing a project to help others in and around the community.
Here’s a glimpse of the work the College has been involved in throughout this week:
Early Years Holywell Primary School Visit
Students from across the College have been helping Primary School children get a taste for College life.
Early Years students ran ‘pebble painting’ sessions, in which the children could design and create pebble art, with guidance from Level 2 learners.

Megan, Early Years Level 2, said about the workshops: “We’ve had the task of interacting with the children and helping them create their ideas. This is great as I’m improving my social skills and communication skills that I’ve learnt on the course.”
Fellow student, Ellie, added: “For me, it’s fun to see the ideas come to life and to create different artworks.”
Construction Cement Fields, Intertidal Allotment Project
Our Brick and Carpentry students took part in a workshop led by Cement Fields, who are leading a community project creating intertidal allotments along shorelines in Kent.
The initiative hopes to encourage the natural growth of plant life and animal habitats by creating structures and forms to sit within beaches and shores.

Emma Leach, Associate Curator from Cement Fields said: “We’re really trying to involve people in developing what it means to make an allotment for the coastline. The students are part of the local community so it’s important to build that connection.
“They’re also in a stage of life where they’re learning so it’s fun to be teaching them things but also learning from them.”
Students were introduced to a material called ‘Biochar’. This biodegradable product is being used to create seed holders for the project.
Students were tasked with sanding down cubes of Biochar and drilling large holes that will be filled with compost and seeds.

Thomas, Skills Practitioner, commented: “It’s great to get involved in these kinds of projects as it gives the students more of an insight into what’s happening within their local community and the area that they live.
“It good for them to know about all the positive changes happening in the world.
“The students have worked really hard today. They’ve been very hands on, working as a team to carry out the task.”
Early Years Seashells Nursery Visit
Over the past few weeks, Early Years students have completed multiple visits to Seashells Nursery, where they have provided a variety of fun activities for the children.
Students used everything they have learnt in lessons to prepare for the visits. They planned a variety of activities, taking into consideration the age of ability of the children taking part.
Creative Media Holywell Primary School Visit
Thanks to interactive workshops from Creative Media students, the children from Holywell Primary learnt more about what they could achieve in the future.
They explored the world of storyboarding, animation and virtual reality, with clay models and Meta VR Headsets used by the children.

Assisting with demoing virtual reality apps and games, including a space station, was Level 2 learner Damien, who enjoyed the opportunity to teach the children. He said: “We’ve gone from teaching three people at a time which we’ve done before to ten people at a time, which is a challenge, but it is quite fun.”
